New report from the National Cancer Registry: Patterns of care and survival of cancer patients in Ireland 1994 to 2004

This report (downloadable as summary report or full report) shows marked improvements in treatment and survival of Irish cancer patients over the period 1994-2004. However, geographic disparities in treatment and survival (at the level of HSE administrative area) are still evident, although reduced to some degree. These findings highlight the need to improve access to consistent levels of care for Irish cancer patients, a major aim of the National Cancer Control Programme and the ongoing reorganization of cancer treatment services.

Consulation on proposed minimum cancer dataset

The National Cancer Strategy has recommended that a minimum national dataset should be collected for all cases of cancer. The process began with a national workshop last June, followed by the establishment of a multi-disciplinary Expert Group to produce a draft dataset. The Expert Group now wishes to carry out a wide consultation on the proposed dataset.

Figures released today by the EUROCARE group show survival of cancer patients in Ireland during 2000-2002 to be above the European average for men but below the average for women. This study, in which the National Cancer Registry was the Irish participant, is the first to directly compare cancer survival in Ireland with that in other European countries
