Cancer Trends - Neuroendocrine Cancers

A short report published today by the National Cancer Registry gives an overview of neuroendocrine tumours in Ireland. A complex group of cancers, many of which are benign, they occur most commonly in the digestive system.  This trends report focuses on invasive neuroendocrine tumours and non-invasive (carcinoids) of the appendix only.  An annual average of 113 invasive cases were   diagnosed in Ireland between 1994 and 2010, resulting in an incidence rate of 3 cases per 100,000 per year.  An average of 27 carcinoids of the appendix were also diagnosed per year. Similar numbers of males and females were diagnosed and incidence has increased over time.
