News from the Director’s Office - September 2017

This month we are delighted to welcome several new employees to NCRI. Some are new positions and others are replacing staff on leave, that have retired and/or transitioned to part time.

Ms Rose McMorrow joins as a Blood Cancer Network Ireland (BCNI) Data Registrar. She started on September 1st and has office space at NCRI and Cork University Hospital (CUH – borrowed space we’re trying to find permanent space ASAP). Rose has many years of experience as an oncology/haematology/clinical trials nurse in various Dublin hospitals such as St James’s, Beaumont, and Adelaide and Meath Hospitals. She also worked in the Northern Ireland Centre for Clinical Oncology in Belfast. Most recently she has worked in the Radiation Oncology Clinical Trials Unit in St Luke’s centre at St James’s hospital in Dublin. NCRI and BCNI are lucky to have found someone with oncology/haematology experience to take up the position.

Dr Conan Donnelly joins us as the NCRI Research Manager.  This position will have been a long time vacant by the time Conan starts on September 11th. Conan worked as a Research Fellow at Northern Ireland Cancer Registry between 2009 and 2017. He was involved in securing funding for various cancer epidemiology research projects. He was also involved in the delivery of the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership in Northern Ireland as well as being responsible for overseeing the publication of official statistics on cancer incidence, survival and prevalence in Northern Ireland. Conan’s expertise will be essential to reinvigorating cancer epidemiology at NCRI.

Ms Gillian O’Farrell begins on September 18th as a Cork-based Cancer Data Registrar (CDR). She will have desks at NCRI and CUH (again permanent CUH location needing to be sorted). Gillian is a nurse with many years of nursing experience. She has worked in CUH since 1990 with a break for 3 years between 1995 and 1998 where she worked as a staff nurse in A&E in St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin. Her most recent post was in CUH responsible for day surgery admission and theatre reception. She is leaving that post to start work as a CUH-based CDR replacing a CDR who retired earlier this year.

Dr Aoife Coffey will join us on September 19th as a Data Quality Officer in the Data Management Group. She will be with us for 6-months replacing staff on maternity leave. Aoife has a BSc in ecology from UCC (2011) and a PhD in plant science (UCC 2017). Since completing her PhD she has been employed as lecturer and demonstrator in UCC. Aoife’s experience will help maintain data processing at NCRI.

Welcome to all and best wishes for a good start and long stay at NCRI!
