Registry researcher shortlisted for media fellowship

Alison Pearce has been short-listed to become one of up to ten British Science Association Media Fellows.

Alison Pearce, a researcher with the Registry, has been short-listed to become one of up to ten British Science Association Media Fellows in 2014. The media fellowships provide a unique opportunity for scientists, social scientists, clinicians and engineers to spend three to six weeks working at a media outlet. Media hosts can be national or regional press, radio or online media, and include the Guardian, the BBC and the Irish Times. Fellows are mentored by professional journalists and learn how the media operates and how to use the media to engage the wider public with science. The fellowship scheme has been running since 1987, and was expanded last year to include Irish applicants.

Alison is a health economics researcher who has a strong interest in how science and research are communicated to the general public. She contributes to maintaining the research content on the Registry website, including writing news items about recent Registry research and working with a graphic designer to prepare infographics about important cancer topics. In addition, Alison also manages the Registry twitter profile. As an HRB-funded ICE post-doctoral research fellow at the Registry, her current projects are examining the productivity losses associated with cancer and patients preferences for, and the cost effectiveness of, different models of follow-up care after the completion of cancer treatment.
