Health services research

Health services research examines how people get access to health care practitioners [1] and health services, how much care costs, and what happens to patients [2] as a result of this care.

The health service research theme at the National Cancer Registry involves the initiation, and support of projects in the following areas:

  • describing patterns of diagnosis and care of cancer patients in Ireland, and exploring and investigating factors associated with access to, or receipt of, care;
  • investigating cancer patients experiences of care;
  • quantifying the economic impact of cancer in Ireland, from the perspectives of the health services, patients and their families, and society as a whole;
  • evaluating the service and support needs of cancer survivors and their family members;
  • evaluating different models of cancer service provision;
  • evaluating the effectiveness, and impact on participants, of cancer screening programmes and tests;
  • developing and evaluating interventions (e.g., to enhance cancer screening, patient adherence to  treatment);
  • modelling the medical and economic consequences of cancer-related health technologies (such as screening tests).
