News from the Director’s Office - January 2019

As we head into another new year the news from the Director's Office this month is an appreciative look back and expectant glance forward.

2018 was an exceptional year. First, NCRI marked its 25th anniversary collecting national cancer data. Congratulations to all NCRI staff old, new and retired who have contributed to making this milestone possible!

NCRI’s involvement in the CervicalCheck controversy and subsequent Scally Scoping Inquiry shifted the focus, tone and pace of NCRI in 2018. The experience taught us a lot about where NCRI should be in the future. It also created a high level of stress that warrants special appreciation for staff that took on the necessary related tasks.

Tracy Kelleher, Jean Kelly, Fiona Dwane, Grace Gregan and the entire CDR staff worked tirelessly to process NCRI cervical cancer data. Checking, double checking and often under extreme pressure - much gratitude to all for their exemplary efforts!

Big thanks also to Eamonn O’Leary who stepped up to coordinate our very successful Subject Access Request (SAR) procedure and the rest of the team that made sure every patient requesting their data got it as efficiently as possible - Catherine McGovern, the data team, Grace Gregan, Geraldine Finn. This was no small task given that NCRI had never processed a SAR in its previous 25 years.

2019 will be all about beginnings with a new NCRI strategy and full focus on implementing the nine NCRI Scally Inquiry recommendations. There is lots of work ahead that will be accompanied by ample opportunities to unpack NCRI’s full potential.  It's sure to be an exciting year for NCRI.  It was our staff that made the challenges of 2018 a success and it will indisputably be our staff that make the accomplishments of 2019 possible.
