World Cancer Day 2014 - 'Debunk the myths'

There are many myths about cancer, and this year World Cancer Day aims to tackle four of them.

World Cancer Day takes place every year on the 4th of February and is the single initiative under which the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), its members, partners and the entire world can unite together in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. World Cancer Day 2014 has the theme ‘Debunk the myths’, and you can learn the truth about four common cancer myths by going to the World Cancer Day website.

To mark World Cancer Day a new global cancer report compiled by UN Agency, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) shows:

  • As a single entity, cancer is the biggest cause of mortality worldwide, with an estimated 8.2 million deaths from cancer in 2012
  • Global cancer incidence over four years increased by 11% to an estimated 14.1 million cases in 2012
  • Cancer cases worldwide are forecast to rise by 75% and reach close to 25 million over the next two decades

The message of this report is similar to the recently released Cancer Projections for Ireland 2015 – 2040, which shows that the incidence of cancer in Ireland is expected to double by 2040.
