What is cancer registration?

Cancer registries provide adequate historical trend and population-based data to monitor changes in cancer incidence and survival over long periods of time.

A cancer registry aims to deliver timely, comparable and high-quality cancer data.  This is by collecting information on every new diagnosis of cancer occurring. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, the doctor or hospital records the relevant details. This applies to everyone, including children.

The National Cancer Registry collects this information in the Republic of Ireland.
