The PiCTure 2 study is investigating the care experiences of men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland - from initial presentation at the GP and/or Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing, through further investigations, treatment decision making, treatment and monitoring/follow-up check-ups. It will provide detailed insight into their experiences and identify whether any service developments are needed to ensure that all men have the best care experience possible.
Patient experience is increasingly recognised as an important measure of quality of care. Internationally, there have been many studies of cancer patients’ experiences, but in Ireland this area is under-researched. Studies in other countries have shown that cancer patients who report higher levels of satisfaction with their cancer care also report a higher quality-of-life and lower levels of anxiety and depression; in addition, they are more likely to cooperate with treatment which ultimately leads to better clinical outcomes.
PiCTure 2 involves a national postal survey assessing specific domains of care, including:
The survey was developed through cognitive interviewing techniques and dispatched, in early 2013, to men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 1,500 completed questionnaires were received and data analysis is underway.
The PiCTure 2 findings will be important for men, their families, cancer support organisations, healthcare professionals, and those who plan and provide cancer services.
