News from the Director's Office - August 2016

This month it’s “a changing of the guard - out with the old (many THANKS to Harry!) and in with the new”. Taking on this new adventure at NCR is both pleasure and privilege. Moving country is always exciting but having spent several weeks in Cork and at NCR in May it feels more like returning than newly arriving - it was lovely to be warmly greeted with “welcome back” from NCR colleagues. NCR has a proud legacy of cancer registration and a bright future for effectively supporting development of policy and practice in cancer control - it’s an honour to take up this appointment.

My first months will be getting up to speed and identifying a prioritised to do list with the NCR team. The list will include a thorough review of all key areas of NCR responsibility and setting targets for future developments (e.g. new staff to address current registration challenges, regrowth of research capacities). I will be managing towards the “triple bottom line”. Leadership focused on creating a (1)sustainable & healthy NCR that promotes (2)employee well-being & social responsibility along with (3)improving productivity & maintaining fiscal accountability. My joint appointment as professor of cancer epidemiology at UCC will enhance our ability to collaborate and disseminate both nationally and internationally. I look forward to working together with NCR staff to improve the Irish cancer experience.
