National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Cancer Conference 2015

NCRI 2015 conference

The findings from some of the Registry’s research projects were recently highlighted at the annual NCRI cancer conference Liverpool. The NCRI is a UK-wide partnership between cancer research funders, which promotes collaboration between member organisations such as Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. The aim of the NCRI is to improve the value and benefits of cancer research for the public.

Mr Chris Brown, Registry biostatistician, gave an oral presentation entitled: ‘Effect of pre-diagnostic NSAID use on ovarian cancer survival’. His research is looking at associations between non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ovarian cancers. People take NSAIDs such as aspirin for many reasons, including migraines, arthritis and back pain. However, it is also possible that people who take NSAIDs may be at reduced risk of cancer and related death. Using the NCRI’s ovarian cancer database linked with prescription data, he has found some association between pre-diagnostic NSAID usages and improved cancer-specific survival. The research team are now replicating his analysis in data from Northern Ireland and England.

Dr Alison Pearce’s research on productivity losses for cancer-related mortality in Ireland  was presented as a poster at the conference. When individuals stop working due to cancer this represents a loss to society – the loss of productivity. The analysis for this study estimated the productivity losses associated with cancer deaths in Ireland between 2011 and 2030. The estimated 233,000 deaths from cancer in Ireland between 2011 and 2030 will result in total lost productivity of €73 billion. The results of Dr Pearce’s work highlight that while common cancers place a heavy burden on society, cancers which result in deaths among younger people result in large productivity losses, and should therefore also be considered in cancer prevention and control policies.
