Strategy

NCRI’s corporate strategy sets out a clear direction for the future and outlines measures to advance its mission and vision. The strategy encourages innovation and enhances operational efficiency.  

Through this strategy, NCRI reaffirms its role as Ireland’s trusted source for cancer data, providing critical insights that drive advancements in cancer care and enhance patient outcomes.  

At the heart of the 2024-2026 strategy is the vision of Excellent data insights for better cancer outcomes. NCRI integrates its core values of Respect, Trust, Collaboration, Enthusiasm, Quality, and Confidentiality into all its activities.

This objective seeks to expand the data that NCRI collects about the cancer patient journey. Since the establishment of NCRI in 1991, the diagnosis and treatment of cancer has changed significantly, leading to larger volumes of more complex data. In addition, there has been a significant increase in the population and a change in its age profile. These trends are expected to continue, resulting in changing needs and expectations of key stakeholders, including those affected by cancer.

NCRI is committed to providing valuable insights to the public, those affected by cancer, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and other key stakeholders. It continuously works to improve communication with stakeholders, showcase its work, and provide information and materials for use by academics, clinicians, researchers, media, and the public. The data processed and stored by NCRI are of a highly sensitive nature and a key part of this objective is to communicate and assure that NCRI safeguards and secures these data with the highest of standards in data protection and security protocols.

This objective focuses on the evolving management and use of health information, driven by the Health Information Bill 2023 and the Digital Health and Social Care Strategic Framework. These initiatives lay the foundation for a modern national health information system to support patient care and broader health service goals. With extensive experience in handling sensitive health data, NCRI is uniquely positioned as a thought leader in this evolving landscape. NCRI will work with the Department of Health, HSE, National Cancer Control Programme and major hospitals to develop standardised templates for data sharing, collection, automated capture, and intelligent processing – ensuring the efficient management of increasingly complex health data.
